Abstract
The use of the silanization/hydrosilation method for the modification of silica is extended to include the bonding of alkynes to hydride sur faces. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform and cross-polari zation and magic-angle spinning NMR studies confirm the bonding of sev eral different types of alkynes to the silica hydride and elemental an alysis indicates high surface coverage (>3.8 mu mol/m(2)) for four of the five bonded phases. Static stability tests indicate good resistanc e to hydrolysis at both high and low pH. Preliminary chromatographic e valuations of the bonded materials demonstrate good separation charact eristics in both the reversed- and normal-phase modes. (C) 1998 Elsevi er Science B.V.
