Stratigraphic and tectono-sedimentary analysis of the Lower Cretaceous
series in the Le Kef area, north-western Tunisia, provides informatio
n on their geodynamic history from the Valanginian to the Albian. Exte
nsional tectonics induced tilled blocks and half-grabens. Two main sta
ges were distinguished: the first pre-Aptian and the second Late Aptia
n and Albian. These periods could be related to extensional episodes t
hat caused the opening of the central Atlantic and the Ligurian Tethys
(Jurassic-Early Cretaceous) and later the Mesogean sea (Late Aptian).
