A detailed analysis of the Argentat coal basin and its Hercynian subst
ratum has made it possible to propose a simple model of their common s
tructure. This Stephanian basin is genetically a topographic consequen
ce of the folding of its metamorphic substratum. It was installed in a
compressive offshoot of the Argentat sinistral strike-slip fault whic
h, in this area, developed kilometre-size drag folds. Inferences are c
onsidered for the coal basins of the French Massif central and Late He
rcynian faults. ((C) Academie des sciences / Elsevier, Paris.).
