A new series of N-halamine polymers has been synthesized and tested in
granular form, on glass and as fiber substrates for efficacy at inact
ivating bacteria. Copolymers and grafted copolymers were prepared with
4-(alkyl acryloxymethyl)-4-ethyl-2-oxazolidinones and commercial mono
mers or polymers. These polymers are inexpensive to synthesize and are
efficient biocides in granular form and as surface-coated disinfectan
ts. They can be coated on glass, plastic, and fibrous materials, which
gives them considerable potential as commercial disinfectants. They c
ould be used for a variety of industrial, commercial, and medical appl
ications.
