High-gain, self-amplified spontaneous emission free-electron lasers (S
ASE FEL's), with proposed operation in wavelengths extending down to x
rays, require intense relativistic electron beams, which under certai
n conditions can generate large diamagnetic fields. The action of thes
e fields has the potential to seriously degrade FEL performance. It is
shown here by both analysis and simulation that the finite size of th
e electron beams diminishes this effect so that it is negligible for p
roposed SASE FEL's.
