The results of a recent study about the role of short-range correlatio
ns on the occupation numbers of the shell model orbits in light nuclei
are reconsidered by assuming a sort of state dependence of the single
particle wave functions in the ''natural orbital'' representation, wh
ich is used for the determination of the occupation probabilities. It
turns out that such a treatment leads to a significant reduction of th
e total depletion of the nuclear Fermi sea. The state dependence of sh
ort range correlations is also discussed.
