For the past 60 years, grandmultiparity has been considered an obstetr
ic hazard. As increased parity tends to be more common among lower soc
ioeconomic groups and grandmultipara mothers tend to be older, these f
actors may well explain the major portion of the reported increased in
cidence of perinatal complications. Summarizing the authors' recent ex
perience and the recently published data, the authors conclude that gr
andmultiparity is not as great a cause for concern in an economically
stable and healthy population that has access to high-quality medical
care.
