We report on the first observations of astronomical sources made with
the mini-Gregorian feed of the 305 m Arecibo telescope together with a
n acousto-optic spectrometer (AOS). Both the mini-Gregorian and the AO
S have a bandwidth of 500 MHz, permitting wide bandwidth dynamic spect
ra of both celestial and solar sources to be obtained. In the examples
reported herein, we used the 5 GHz receiver, operating between 4.5 an
d 5.0 GHz with a spectral resolution of 1 MHz and temporal resolution
of 20 ms. We represent observations of the flare star AD Leo, of the S
un, and of interplanetary scintillations of the quasar 0735 + 178 whic
h, at the time it was observed, was about 8-degrees from the Sun.
