Are acoustic methods, used for zooplankton studies, appropriate to phy
toplankton biomass estimation ? In order to evaluate the phytoplankton
ic contribution on acoustic data, we have studied scattering, attenuat
ion, and sound velocity through a unicellular phytoplanktonic cloud of
Dunaliella tertiolecta. Here are presented the results obtained in vi
tro and a summary of those found in literature. The acoustic detection
of phytoplankton in the sea is not applicable today.
