Association in electrolyte solutions is investigated as a part of the
thermodynamic and transport excess functions in the framework of diffe
rent theoretical approaches, and the influence of solvent-averaged sho
rt range interactions between ions on the association constant is disc
ussed. The low concentration chemical model (IcCM) is compared with re
sults of the MSA theory for equilibrium and nonequilibrium situations
for models which include interactions with ion pairs. At the limit of
strong electrostatic association a parameter-free theory is derived fo
r ion pairs made up by ions of different diameters. The limitations of
the models, and the inherent approximations of the theories are discu
ssed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
