Abstract
To explain the crystallization behaviour and phase relationships of pr ecursor derived Si-B-C-N ceramics, ln(pN(2))-T diagrams were calculate d. The results can be used to optimize the chemical composition and th e physico-chemical conditions for heat treatment. Stabilization of spe cific phase assemblages requires careful adjustment of the N-2 partial pressure during heating and cooling. The high thermal stability of si licoboron carbonitrides can be explained by their particular microstru cture and the resulting stabilization of Si3N4.
