This paper examines the degree of success of the city of Curitiba, Bra
zil, in controlling the energy expended in transport through integrate
d land use and transport planning. Three key variables-settlement shap
e, density and location of activities-are applied to the investigation
of this rare built example of a linear city. Conclusions are drawn wh
ich enable us to compare this city's experience favourably with Wester
n cities, in terms of fuel burn, whilst also raising doubts about the
validity of this experience as a benchmark In the context of developin
g countries. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd, All rights reserved.
