Abstract
Many speakers of Serbo-Croatian read the language in two phonemically precise and partially overlapping alphabets. Twenty years of experimen ts direct toward this ability have led to deeper understandings of the role of speech-related processes in reading and the contrasts and sim ilarities among the world's alphabetic writing systems.
