To study the relation between the chemical structure of solutes and th
eir retention behaviour in thin layer chromatography on silica gel, th
e retention constant (R-M value) of a series of variously substituted
1,6-anhydrohexose and D-aldopentose derivatives were measured as a fun
ction of the composition of eight non-aqueous binary eluents. The slop
es and intercepts of the linear relations between the retention consta
nts (R-M) and the logarithm of the volume fraction of the stronger elu
ent component have been calculated applying in adsorption chromatograp
hy well-known Soczewinski equation and discussed in relation to the so
lute and eluent characteristics.
