Abstract
The relation between fracture surface morphology and the three-dimensi onal structure of crack fronts is investigated through direct observat ion of brittle cracks in gels. A key notion in this investigation is t he discontinuity of the crack front, whose advancement creates the fra cture surface. We discuss the significance of our findings in the stud ies of general three-dimensional brittle fractures.
