Abstract
The second harmonic generation (SHG) anisotropy of an Au(110) electrod e has been studied over a wide potential range varying from - 600 mV, where the surface is micro-faceted, to the unreconstructed surface at 600 mV. The interference SHG anisotropy (ISHGA), a new approach which allows one to measure directly the non-linear polarizability of the su rface was used. The potential dependence of the symmetry components is discussed. A previously proposed model for the anisotropy of the Au(1 10) surface could be confirmed. Though rather weak, a quadrupole contr ibution has also been measured, showing a significant potential depend ence.
