Abstract
Previous studies have shown that antrectomy (which decreases gastrin p roduction) is associated with decreased crypt cell proliferation rate throughout the gastrointestinal tract. However, the present experiment s demonstrate that there is hyperproliferation of the crypts throughou t the rat small bowel following antrectomy, and this hyperproliferatio n can be completely negated by bilateral truncal vagotomy or local sym pathectomy of the small bowel. These results support the probable invo lvement of the autonomic nerve supply in the control of crypt cell pro liferation (for which there is also other evidence). They also confirm the findings of other researchers that gastrin is not involved in the control of crypt cell proliferation in the small bowel to any extent.
