Gg. Kodenev et al., DETERMINATION OF THE TIME-SCALE OF THE BAIKAL DEEP-WATER RENEWAL WITHTHE USE OF CHEMICAL TRACERS, Geologia i geofizika, 39(6), 1998, pp. 842-850
The fact that water has a maximum density depending on pressure plays
a significant role in the processes of deep-water renewal in deep, tem
perate, fresh-water lakes, such as, for example, Lake Baikal. The pres
ent paper discusses the questions of deep ventilation. On the basis of
interpreting data on the content of chemical tracers in the Baikal wa
ter, the rates of the water renewal in the lake basins have been deter
mined. As tracers, the freons F-11 and F-12 - man-induced materials st
able both in water and in the air - were used, whose concentration pro
files were measured in the course of expedition studies in 1992-93.
