The mechanism of catalytic hydroxylation of phenols, based on the prin
ciples of the metallocomplex catalysis and considering the effect of v
arying initial parameters, including pH of the medium, is proposed in
analyzing the regularities of the peroxide oxidation of mono- and diox
ybenzenes and the overall mathematical model of the catalytic hydroxyl
ation of phenols. The physical meaning of all terms in the kinetic equ
ations of the model is considered, and the corresponding constants are
determined. The possible structure of the intermediate hydroxylation
complex and the effect of cerium sulfate additives on the reaction sel
ectivity are discussed using the spectral data.
