We present a general analysis of channel drop filter structures compos
ed of two waveguides and an optical resonator system. We show that 100
% transfer between the two waveguides can occur by creating resonant s
tates of different symmetry, and by forcing an accidental degeneracy b
etween them. The degeneracy must exist in both the real and imaginary
parts of the frequency. Based on the analysis we present novel photoni
c crystal channel drop filters. Numerical simulations demonstrate that
these filters exhibit ideal transfer characteristics. (C) 1998 Optica
