A gas valve capable of independently controlling the gas pressure and
composition in a three-layer puff is described. The valve is intended
for use in Z-pinch experiments and provides a pressure of up to 10(5)
Pa at the entrance of a supersonic jet nozzle with an outer puff diame
ter of up to 8 cm. The autonomous control is provided by a system of i
ndependent gas inlets for each layer. The azimuthal asymmetry is achie
ved by using mixers leveling the gas pressure at the nozzle entrance.
