Abstract
The influence of lead nitrate (1 . 10(-5) to 1 . 10(-2)) on seed germi nation and growth of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seedlings was studied . No toxic effect of lead on rate of radicle emergence was observed at any concentration applied. Shoot growth was only slightly affected. R oot growth was inhibited completely by 1 . 10(-2) M and partially by 1 . 10(-3) M lead nitrate. The inhibition resulted from nonselective su ppression of both cell division and cell elongation by lead ions. Chan ge in the pattern of root system architecture, i.e. formation of short root system consisting of the same number of roots, can indicate lead toxic concentration.
