The methodology of the generalized transmission line network represent
ation and the modes orthogonality of the nonradiative dielectric waveg
uide (NRD-guide) are studied in this paper. Under the longitudinal com
plex power conservation and defining the equivalent characteristic imp
edance and the mode voltage and mode current of every kind of hybrid m
ode, the NRD-guide has been equalized to the TEM-wave transmission lin
e, and the ideal lossless NRD-guide that exists several hybrid modes h
as been represented as a multiport network which the generalized ABCD-
matrix equation has also been given. These will contribute to the harm
onic balance analysis for some kinds of NRD-guide circuits in a wide b
and. In order to theoretically solve the mode excitation and conversio
n problems, the modes orthogonality and self-contained property of the
NRD-guide have been deeply studied in the paper for the first time. U
tilizing the Lorenz's reciprocity law, the general formula for computa
tion the mode exciting coefficient and a series of mode-excited criter
ion are obtained. The above studies will supply the theoretical basis
for analyzing and designing the NRD-guide active circuits in millimete
r-wave band.
