A system of equations describing the collinear diffraction of light by
successive three-dimensional acoustic trains of finite length with a
Gaussian amplitude distribution is derived. The solution of these equa
tions provides the distribution pattern of the Gaussian amplitudes of
transmitted and diffracted light under strong acoustooptical interacti
on and the dependence of the transmission band of an acoustooptical ce
ll on the ratio between the train length and the crystal length as wel
l as on the phase difference between the trains. The transmission curv
es are also analyzed for light diffraction by non-Gaussian acoustic tr
ains under strong acoustooptical interaction.
