A study of 204 technology implementation projects found that there is
a significant difference between the overall efficiency of American an
d Canadian factories. The superior efficiency of American plants at im
plementing technology is a result of better outcomes for factories whi
ch are part of multibranch networks. The specific technology under stu
dy is the implementation of CFC-alternative cleaning sg stems in the N
orth American electronic circuit assembly industry. Results were obtai
ned using data envelopment analysis and a Wilcoxon rank sum test to co
nsider differences in project complexity, efficiency (time to implemen
t), and effectiveness (ability to obtain all possible benefits).
