Peace research and International Relations appear compatible but are c
ombative. Due to their divergent responses to the dichotomy indentifie
d by Andrew Linklater as men versus citizens, peace research is margin
alised within International Relations. This dichtomy, involving tensio
n between one's obligations to humanity and one's duties as a citizen,
can be reconciled within a critical theory approach. Without reconcil
iation, the paper argues, the current relationship between peace resea
rch and International Relations will remain.
