The role of intellectual property protection in strengthening the pres
ervation of the institutional integrity of universities is discussed.
The analytical context is provided in terms of a technology transfer m
odel that represents the interactions between universities and the mar
ket. The analysis is presented with the background of New Growth Theor
ies, which explore the impact of knowledge in wealth creation. As a co
nsequence, the various elements that al-e to be considered in the deci
sion to protect intellectual property in universities are discussed, a
nd policy implications for universities are derived. The key idea rela
tes to the rationale for undertaking technology transfer initiatives a
t universities, which we regard as a complement to traditional types o
f research, and as an effort to clarify the role of the university. (C
