Abstract
A review of studies from different European countries reveals that res earch into the new role of middle management in new production systems is quite inconsistent. Referring to the example of the German 'Indust riemeister' (master craftsman) if will be shown that these inconsisten cies are due to different models of the future role of middle manageme nt.
