Cellular changes of the endocytobiont, i.e., the yeast-like symbiote (
YLS), in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stal), after treat
ing with high temperatures at 32 degrees C or 35 degrees C, were studi
ed by using electron microscopy. Scanning electron micrographs showed
distortion of the endocytobiont cell wall, forming abnormal shape afte
r incubating at high temperatures. The major cellular changes in YLS u
nder high temperatures were found to be disintegration of cell wall, d
egeneration of nucleus, and loss of cytoplasm as observed by transmiss
ion electron microscopy.
