A new noncontact technique to asses the differences in surface charact
eristics of machined surfaces is presented The method suggested here i
s based on a microcomputer vision system to analyse the pattern of sca
ttered light from the surface to derive a roughness parameter during m
achining of the surface. This suggests that the system can be succesfu
