The estimation of the performance of earth-moving plant is currently c
alculated through experience taking only limited account of the materi
al the plant will be traversing. The performance of dump trucks on cha
lk haul roads has not been studied to any great extent, especially in
relation to speed of dump trucks and trafficking of haul roads, The es
timation of the performance of earth-moving plant on this material is
important for the contractor and the client to ensure that the contrac
t is completed efficiently and on time. Various possible sources and s
olutions of degrading of the haul roads are investigated and discussed
. The apparent rolling resistance of the driver-vehicle-terrain system
is shown to be dependent on the grade of the haul road. The speed of
the vehicles and therefore a more accurate estimation of the productiv
ity of the plant on chalk can be calculated from a knowledge of the gr
adients of the haul road.
