Tetrasaccharide Gal beta 1-->4(GlcNAc), was synthesized from N,N',N ''
-triacetylchitotriose (GlcNAc), and lactose using transglycosylation w
ith a beta-D-galactosidase from Bacillus circulans. The reducing termi
nal of Gal beta 1-->4(GlcNAc)(3) was oxidized and connected to p-vinyl
benzylamine Pia amide linkage, and the resulting oligosaccharide-subst
ituted styrene monomer was polymerized with the radical initiator, 2,2
'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride at 60 degrees C. Glycopolys
tyrene was found to bind strongly with wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) and
tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) agglutinin (LEA) by inhibition of he
magglutination and double diffusion.
