Abstract
Adhesion atomic force microscopy (AFM) can be used to characterize the surface chemical composition of lipid monolayers. Analyzing adhesion AFM images of dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DMPE) monolayers on mica, we demonstrated that liquid-condensed domains are fractals. Fra ctal dimension calculation using adhesion atomic force microscopy imag es of lipid monolayers shows that this method introduces artifacts tha t must be carefully eliminated.
