The incorporation of polysilicic acid into the structure of a cellulos
ic fibre enhances the fire resistance of the hybrid by two distinct me
chanisms. One is the formation on the fibre surface of an inherently i
ncombustible char, and the other is a lowering of the temperature at w
hich water is released from the fibre. This paper examines the mechani
sms in question.
