Ultrasound has been used in the dyeing of polyester fibres with disper
se dyes at low temperature, and results compared with those achievable
in conventional dyeing at the boil using a carrier. Dyeings were enha
nced in presence of carrier and by pre-swelling the fibres, although t
he results obtained were not generally as good as those that can be ob
tained in conventional high-temperature processes. Taking into account
the energy conservation aspect, ultrasound appears to be a promising
technique for dyeing.
