The interaction of CF3+ ions with a stainless steel surface covered wi
th hydrocarbons has been studied with a recently constructed BESTOF ta
ndem mass spectrometer as a function of the collision energy from abou
t 0 up to 60 eV. Whereas the efficient reflection of projectile ions a
t low collision energy and the efficient ejection of chemically sputte
red ions at higher collision energies found here are in semiquantitati
ve agreement with a previous report, results obtained here also demons
trate that reactive ion surface collisions are an important feature of
CF3+ impact on the hydrocarbon-covered surface leading to the formati
on of various fluorohydrocarbon ions such as CH2F+, CH2CF+, and CHF2+.
