Mj. Harris et al., AWARENESS OF POWER AS A MODERATOR OF EXPECTANCY CONFIRMATION - WHOS THE BOSS AROUND HERE, Basic and applied social psychology, 20(3), 1998, pp. 220-229
Perceiver and target awareness of perceiver power were manipulated ort
hogonally to examine their roles as potential moderators of expectancy
confirmation. Perceivers were given an expectancy manipulation that t
heir partners in an upcoming interaction were either high or low in cr
eativity. In addition, perceivers were either told or not told that th
ey were assigned to role-play the boss in this interaction; targets' b
eliefs that the perceiver would be the boss were also orthogonally man
ipulated. Analyses indicated that perceiver awareness of power was a m
ore important predictor of expectancy confirmation than was target awa
reness of perceiver power. Implications for understanding the dynamics
underlying power relations are discussed.
