C-9 aldehyde was found in Aloysia triphylla essential oil. It was test
ed an diarrhoeic mice induced with castor oil or magnesium sulphate. I
t was found that this compound diminished the number of diarrhoeic fae
ces at doses of 7, 14 and 28 mu L. The highest effect was found with 1
4 mu L. Also, the effect of this compound was evaluated on the intesti
nal transit of rats increased by castor oil. At the dose used, the int
estinal transit was delayed in the first 30 min after adminstration of
the cathartic agent. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
