Abstract
Digitalis and other plants containing cardioactive glycosides are infr equently used today for congestive heart failure. Hawthorn has positiv e inotropic effects and accelerates the heart rate but its use is rest ricted to the prevention of angina. Ginkgo is employed in chronic cere bral ischaemia and intermittent claudication white horse-chestnut is e ffective in chronic venous insufficiency. These vegetable drugs are us eful in themselves and also in association with more effective therape utic agents. (C) 1998 John Whey & Sons, Ltd.
