Abstract
Measurements of alpha-fragment coincidences in the reaction plane in t he reaction Kr-84 + Al-27 at 8.5 MeV/u show that the fully energy-damp ed symmetric fragments are dominantly produced in deeply inelastic col lisions. From the measured a and proton multiplicities, the reaction t ime is deduced to be 8 X 10(-21) seconds. The diffusion model calculat ions incorporating this reaction time reproduce well the measured frag ment charge distributions. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
