Hemochromatosis is characterized by iron accumulation in different sit
es of the body, with subsequent organ toxicity In this article, the he
patic and systemic consequences of iron overload are reviewed, with an
emphasis on hereditary hemochromatosis. The clinical management of sy
stemic iron overload is highlighted, with a special discussion of the
role of newly available genetic testing in the diagnosis and family sc
reening of hereditary hemochromatosis.
