We have studied electron transfer from state-selected Rydberg atoms to
(CS2)N and CS2(Ar)N clusters and compared the results to Rydberg elec
tron transfer to isolated CS2 molecules. At large Rydberg principal qu
antum numbers (n > 20), the influence of the positive ionic core becom
es negligible and we are able to directly investigate the competition
between electronic autodetachment of the anions and intracluster energ
y exchanges between the anions and their environment. We show that arg
on atoms are unable to achieve efficient internal energy exchanges in
heterogeneous clusters as compared to the high efficiency of CS2 molec
ules in homogeneous clusters.
