Abstract
A new hexadentate chelating agent with three 3-hydroxy-2-( 1H)-pyridin one moieties combined through flexible aliphatic chains emanating from an apical carbon atom was found to have very high affinity for Fe(III ). The synthesis of the ligand is described; the acid dissociation con stants and the stability constants of its iron(III) complex were deter mined potentiometrically and through spectrophotometric competition wi th EDTA. The flexibility of the ligand and of its Fe(III) complex were confirmed by molecular mechanics. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
