The OFSTED database contains detailed numerical judgements derived fro
m the inspection of the majority of secondary schools in England. Fact
or analysis techniques were used to derive relevant factors at the sch
ool and pupil levels, which were analysed in relation to both lesson o
bservation grades and examination outcomes. The results ave discussed
in relation to the usefulness of the OFSTED database for school effect
iveness research.
