The 38th annual conference of the German Association of Agricultural E
conomists, GeWISoLa, took place in Freising-Weihenstephan from October
6 to 8, 1997. The congress theme was ''agriculture and food industry
in an enlarged EU''. Faced with the pending political changes in Europ
e and the necessary adaptings,numerous representatives of science and
politics - from Central and East European countries, too - discussed t
he diverse aspects of the EU expansion with regard to agriculture and
food industry. The paper summarizes scientific research contributions
of more than 60 authors concerning effects on regional development, fo
od industry, economics, agricultural ecopolitics, mobility of labour a
s well as the transformation problems of agriculture in the Central an
d East European countries. Moreover, there are presented papers referr
ing to particular agricultural sectors and environmental economics and
basic approaches of methods at research. Effects of the coming WTO re
gulations on rural economy are discussed, too.
