Mw. Rich, MYOCARDIAL INJURY CAUSED BY AN ANAPHYLACTIC REACTION TO AMPICILLIN SULBACTAM IN A PATIENT WITH NORMAL CORONARY-ARTERIES/, Texas Heart Institute journal, 25(3), 1998, pp. 194-197
A 63-year-old woman presented with an exacerbation of her chronic obst
ructive pulmonary disease. While receiving an infusion of ampicillin/s
ulbactam, she developed anaphylaxis-induced myocardial injury. Subsequ
ent coronary angiography revealed minimal atherosclerosis of her coron
ary arteries. The patient remained under continuous observation and ca
rdiac monitoring throughout her reaction, thus providing unique insigh
t into the pathophysiology of myocardial injury caused by anaphylaxis.
The medical literature that pertains to this phenomenon is discussed.
