Abstract
Several recursive formulas have been developed in the past for the sol ution of systems of linear first-order equations. None of them is capa ble of dealing with ''backward branching'' as encountered in biologica l compartmental models and in some cases of complex activation in neut ron activation analysis. A new recursive formula in combination with a computer algorithm was developed to overcome this problem. Special at tention is paid to computational problems caused by limited numerical precision and short time intervals.
