A water balance model was utilized to estimate risks of water stress t
o which upland rice (Oriza saliva L.) is exposed when sown during the
period of November-December in Dark Red and Yellow Red Latosols of Col
as State. The regions with high climatic risk were characterized in ti
me and space, utilizing a geographic information system. Results showe
d that the more sowing is delayed, the greater the climatic risk, whic
h increases from North to South and from West to East. Data also showe
d a great precipitation variability in the State.
