Abstract
This paper reviews some of the methods available to the engineer for t he prediction of extreme waves. It then focuses on the long-term indiv idual wave height method in detail. Comments on the errors likely to o ccur during either collection or analysis of wave data are emphasized since large errors can arise from defective data. In particular, the p roblem of dependence of data values constituting a sample, statistical assumptions and data limitations are discussed.
