Studies of evaporated platinum particles onto substrates of highly ori
ented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) and nuclear grade high purity graphite
(NCHPG) were performed by tunnelling microscopy (STM) and high resolu
tion transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Distortion of the elect
ronic density of states of the graphite surface near a particle was ob
served with STM, as well as epitaxial growth of the metal particles as
demonstrated by the HRTEM images.
